For the last 6 years, we at The Independence Project have been helping human rights activists, opposition coalitions and members of the civil society with vital resources to bring about a true democratic transition in Afghanistan. As a privately funded program, our outreach has so far been limited but powerful.
Afghanistan must have a government that not only provides for its citizens, but also empowers them with the tools to utilize their potential. And we believe that the only form of governance best placed to ensure the upliftment of all Afghanistan is a true democracy.
Human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings - they are not granted by any state. These universal rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. They range from the most fundamental - the right to life - to those that make life worth living, such as the rights to food, education, work, health, and liberty.
Why has the focus shifted towards building capacity of cities and urban areas to handle its environments? What constitutes 'capacity-building'? Some definitions and descriptions.
"Specifically, capacity building encompasses the country’s human, scientific, technological, organizational, institutional and resource capabilities. A fundamental goal of capacity building is to enhance the ability to evaluate and address the crucial questions related to policy choices and modes of implementation among development options, based on an understanding of environment potentials and limits and of needs perceived by the people of the country concerned".
